Song in general is meant to be a parralel to the common story of everything in life going great then (enterring the chorus) something happens to change your life drastically and you have to make a choice to let that break you down or overcome. The song is of course about overcoming life surprises and challenges.
Again my personal experience this was based off was the loss of my 2 year old son. It was a car accident and completely unexpected and changed my life and many others around him. Even those that never knew or met him. Still today 3 -years later I run into people at my shows that remember that night very clearly bacuse it makes people think about their own kids or their friends kids etc...these are people that saw it on the news or lived near where the pond where he drowned.
